If you were to see a human brain, you would see a 3 pound, walnut-shaped, most unlikely candidate for the complexity that is the source of human knowledge and understanding. The human brain utilizes about 100 billion neurons and trillions of synapses to process external stimuli and communicate information to the body.

For every neuron, there are about 10,000 synapses, or connections between neurons, which means there are about a quadrillion synapses in the brain. To put this in perspective there are an estimated 100 billion stars in the observable universe, this means there are ten thousand more connections in your brain than stars in the universe!

There is a common myth that we only use 10% of our brain, which is a laughable fallacy in the neuroscience community. For one purpose or another we use virtually the entire brain and although it accounts for only 3 percent of the body’s weight, it consumes 20 percent of the body’s energy.

Can the connections in our brain be increased, strengthened or rewired? Can we change our habits to increase our productivity? This visual outlines some of the brain’s key functionality to learn and retrain your habits.
