GoDaddy, the largest technology provider dedicated to small businesses, announced on Tuesday it has entered an agreement to acquire VoIP provider FreedomVoice for $42 million in cash, and up to $5 million in potential future milestones payments. GoDaddy said the addition of FreedomVoice’s team and cloud-based communications products will further their commitment to enabling small businesses to succeed.

According to the announcement, there are over 210 million small businesses globally, with a large majority relying on desktop or mobile phones for their communication with customers. GoDaddy will now provide voice and calling services among their array of products essential to these small businesses.

“GoDaddy has 14 million customers and many of them have struggled to find affordable and simple telephony solutions,” Steven Aldrich, Chief Product Officer at GoDaddy, said. “FreedomVoice is a natural fit with GoDaddy as we both share a common goal: to harness the power of the cloud to deliver products that fit the specific needs of small businesses, coupled with customized, empathetic customer care.”

As GoDaddy already controls a large segment of the Small Business Market, this acquisition will allow for expansion of their presence with its existing 14 million customers. GoDaddy can now take advantage of FreedomVoice’s current product suite that provides intuitive and affordable communications tailored towards small organizations.

GoDaddy will continue to offer FreedomVocie products through their website and current partners. These services include custom cloud phone numbers either local or toll-free, a cloud-based phone system to deliver enterprise-quality VoIP calls, and other features including automatic call routing to user’s mobile phones.

FreedomVoice’s CEO Eric Thomas, already familiar with their established offerings, will become the Telephony Revenue and Integration Officer at GoDaddy, who also started “a new Telephony business unit to oversee the Company’s communication products strategy and execution,” the announcement said. The unit will be lead by Barry Saik, who also recently joined GoDaddy as a General Manager and Senior Vice President of Telephony.

“At FreedomVoice our mission has always been to help companies start, run and grow, and we’re ecstatic to join GoDaddy who is just as passionate about helping small businesses succeed,” Thomas said. “There is great synergy between our companies and our team can’t wait to get started on delivering the next generation of voice to small businesses around the world.”

GoDaddy and FreedomVoice plan to deliver new cloud-based voice products in the near future, and FreedomVocie will continue to maintain its offices in Encinitas, California.
