Millennial at Work Header

Whether millennials work in tech or not, there’s no denying that this group utilizes technology to the fullest. They were the first generation to grow up with cell phones, laptops, and social media, making them naturals in the digital space. They are also the largest generation since the Baby Boomers, making up 24% of the population, and predicted to account for 75% of the workforce by 2025.

With millennials so involved with and interested in tech, either as consumers or as employees, we wondered which companies appealed to them the most. To find out, we surveyed 1000 people between the ages of 18 and 34 and asked, “Which tech company would you most like to work for?”

An impressive 32.3% of the respondents chose Google. The second most desired company was Apple, which 16% of respondents opted for. Together, these two companies were deemed most desirable by 48% of respondents, monopolizing the list of most coveted tech companies for millennials.

These top two choices, Google and Apple, align with LinkedIn’s top 100 companies of 2015, which was a study of the top companies not only in tech, but across six different industries.

So what makes Google one of the most desired places to work? Despite the fact that it has one of the most difficult interview processes, it pays the highest base salary of all the companies mentioned by respondents — $127,086 for software engineers. The job also comes with lots of perks like free meals, shuttles, fitness centers, and nap pods.

In additions, Google is known for its exceptional employee benefits. For example, if a Googler passes away while working for the company, his or her spouse will receive 50% of their salary for the next ten years. In terms of employee satisfaction, Google received a 4.4, the second highest of all the companies listed. Facebook received the highest score, a 4.5.

Likewise, Apple is known for providing great benefits, even to part-time employees. It also offers tech discounts and training classes and encourages employee growth. It has the second highest base salary — $125,321 for software engineers — and the third highest rating, a 4.0.

Apple and Google also have the second and third highest market cap of $595 billion and $509 respectively. The outlier on the list is Samsung with a market cap of $205 trillion.

Though Google and Apple were by far the most prominent companies mentioned by respondents, millennials also had a few other top picks, which you can see below.
