Google Glass–wearable glasses that have an active Internet connection–look slated to radically alter the communications landscape. With features and function slated to mimic smartphones, Google Glass looks set to optimize alternative messaging services in an all new way. As stated above, Google’s latest innovation is set to operate similarly to a smartphone; however, instead of touch screen navigation, the device will utilize voice commands. Therefore, with an active internet connection, smartphone capability (apps,  processing, etc.), and voice response technology its not hard to imagine Google Glass becoming a communications tool.

Mobile devices are able to function due to phone providers’ plans; however, alternative voice messaging/communications services do not require this. For example, VoIP only requires users to have essentials–such as an active high speed internet connection (and appropriate bandwidth), a microphone and receiver, and a VoIP service plan. That’s it. With this in mind, Google Glass could easily integrate this method of communications. Additionally, softphone apps and services like Skype, Google Talk, and Facebook Messenger allow for voice/video messaging that requires no service plan. Also, these services are optimized for mobility as they both have mobile apps fit with full functionality.

With all these services and functions available, Google Glass is essentially a smartphone without a required provider contract/plan (I.e. AT&T, Verizon, etc.). In integrating alternative messaging solutions, these glasses can move to provide communication without mobile phones and service. Instead, users will be able to communicate directly from the glasses themselves. In doing this, Google Glass will cut the cost of communications systems greatly. While the glasses may require some sort of data package (similar to smartphones and tablets), costs will be significantly lower as they will not require additional service. Additionally, services like VoIP, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Google Talk, etc. are either free or extremely cost efficient; therefore, users wont have to worry about excessive monthly pricing (if any).

With all of the above factors in mind, Google Glass looks ripe for transforming communications’ capability. While the wearable tech may need a stronger microphone and/or receiver, its not hard to envision these upgrades and/or extensions. The only real gripe users may find with these glasses is the devices’ cost (slated around $1500.00). Regardless of pricing, if these glasses are able to utilize alternative communication platforms, they could rival smartphones, as well as revolutionize the communications industry.
